Onesky3 - debrief

background

The OneSky 3 Europe Online event took place on Saturday 4 Oct 03, between 1600z and 2200z, as the third ONESKY event in one year.

A list of expected FIR/VACC's participating in this event is available here.

  • One European UIR was planned to be manned between 1830 and 2130z, but this was cancelled due to last minute Internet outage for the individual.
  • Supervisors were responsible for announcements of VACCs, and monitoring of the servers.
  • Staff members were tasked to provide screenshots during the event.
  • There were no special regulations for OneSky3, except the ones announced on the main page, including some flight planning recommendations for the pilots.

details and statistics

For the third time our three Divisions cooperated in creating a situation never seen before. An entire VATSIM Region online, side to side. From Dublin to Ankara, from Moscow to Lisbon, and many many more. You were able to experience ATC and flights around you as in real life; non stop all the way!

The OneSky3 Event started at 1600 UTC. Except for a few late arrivals, and one EURx cancellation due to unexpected Internet problems, all VACC's were online on time.

According to statistics, the concurrent official connections recorded on this Saturday night was 813 at around 1800z. This is not a new record, but very many thanks to our Members for participating in the effort!

These are the maximum concurrent connections per hour as provided by the VATSIM statistics for that evening:

1600-1700 (603)
1700-1800 (727)
1800-1900 (814)
1900-2000 (813)
2000-2100 (794)
2100-2200 (684)

Stephen Odgaard has provided the following data:

Around 189 ATCs served the air traffic during the event within EUROPE.

More than 1189 registered departures and arrivals within Europe, from aircraft belonging to VA's throughout the world. Note that if an aircraft had more dep/arr within the region, this was only counted as 1 dep and/or arr in this respect.

The Official Flyin ended at 2200 UTC. No major conflicts or incidents have been reported so far.

logs and screenshots

The following file download is available:

Stephen Odgaard has provided an Excel spreadsheet (xls) which includes:

  • Ranking of Airports according to accumulated operations within the 6hrs
  • Hour by hour breakdown of DEP and ARR operations, including one hour
before and after the actual event period
  • Detailed data, including information on controllers signing ON and OFF

Using the filter options in Excel, you can sort the information to your liking. The file is available here (zip-file of 92Kb).

comments and recommended way ahead

Webmasters note: The following comments are picked "as-is", and does not necessarily reflect the views of VATEUR !

Michal J. Zazula, VACC PL:
OS3 failed to reach one goal, namely to provide heavy traffic to areas where the traffic is normally low. Like the Balcans, North Scandinavia, and some Eastern
Europe countries. Multiple screenshots shows overcrowded areas in Germany, Austria, England and North Italy. The rest of Europe had only light to moderate traffic.

Stephen Odgaard, VACC DK:
From my seat this was the best event yet, as the network behaved fantastically.

Roman V Toporkov, VATRUS Events Coord:
OneSky is a good idea, keep going! Not a special event for some ATC areas maybe, but pilots are always satisfied! ;)

David Vail, APA935, Air Pacifica VA:
My enthusiastic congratulations to VATEUR for orchestrating the greatest coverage I have ever seen. I flew from Munich to London-Stansted and had all the centers, approach controls and towers up and running. Fabulous flying day in VATSIM.

Mark Gibson, BAW505:
I had the opportunity to fly from EGLL to UUDD during Onesky 3. Everyone did a fantastic job. I especially want to thank the approach controller in Moscow who was very patient with my misstep over the use of meters for altitudes. Fortunately, my aircraft (PSS 747) had a meters setting and I was able to adjust.
I hope that you can put together more events like this in the future.

Paul Haworth:
Just thought I'd go online and try out my LSZH-EGLL FP for OneSky3. It was a better 'dry run' than I imagined with Swiss, Frankfurt, Brussels, and London Centres all manned, including - to my great pleasure - LSZH_TWR, EGLL_APP, and EGLL_TWR. Just to say "thanks guys"; for me at least it was a really enjoyable night, especially the chap at EGLL_TWR who stayed online long enough to get me on the tarmac!

network

No network problems were encountered or reported during this event !!

A very special thanks to Roberto Bazzano and his VATSIM team for their effort to keep the servers up and running during this event.

conclusion

We would like to thank all VACCs, VAs, Staff and all who directly -, or indirectly -, were involved and participated in OneSky3.

On behalf of VATEUR, VATEUD, VATUK and VATRUS.
